Skateboarding has been a big part of Coeur d’Alene over the past twenty years with the introduction of the downtown skatepark. It was constructed in 1995 through community support and donations the result of this support is a facility which is used by many local and visiting skateboarders and bikers.
The reason for the pursuit of a new skatepark was to create an improved venue for skateboarders and bikers in this community. The children of our area need a venue to practice these activities that is safe and local. Skateparks are a place in which friends are made, tricks are learned, and a bond is formed within the community. Skateparks often reduce illicit behavior and damage to private property. Over the past six years, a local group of skateboard and bike enthusiasts worked to raise awareness of this need and desire. Through this effort, funds were secured for conceptual drawings to include this skatepark into the Four Corners project.
The City of Coeur d’Alene supports this project and has included a designated location within the Four Corners project. In anticipation of this upcoming project, the city demolished the existing skatepark in June 2017. The current plan is to start construction in the spring of 2018. This plan is still in need of funding to assist the city in this asset for our local users and visitors to the Coeur d’ Alene are.
